Noise Event Featuring International Artists Announce for Nepal – NOISE TREPANATION

Nepal announces a “noise” event for this weekend fearing Nepali acts and acts from the US. Here’s the full write-up:

NOISE TREPANATION is the collaborative effort of local and international artists working with contemporary sound art and noise music. The main drive of this showcase is to present a variety of idiosyncratic and distinct forms of contemporary music and sonic art from around the Himalayan region and beyond along with talks and workshops by experts in various fields tethered to sound and performance art.

It will begin with a sound residency in a studio (Flux Box) with artists from Ladkah (Ruhail Qaisar), US (Aaron Dilloway) and Nepal (A.M.U.R.T.A.R.I.T.I). The purpose of this studio residency is to give an opportunity to upcoming artist Ruhail Qaisar, who has been a known figure in the Indian underground metal scene with his band, Vajravarah, SODH, etc, now releasing music as Ruhail Qaisar with his latest album on Danse Noire label. After having multiple sessions in a studio we aim to present it in an event format for the collective listening experience.

The ethos of the collaborative project is fundamentally decolonial- aiming to direct its resources, visibility, and focus towards contributing to support and sustain a healthy context for art and specifically music in the Himalayan region, making sure that the decisional power remains in the hands of the local artists, audiences, and contributors.

About the artists taking part:

Aaron Dilloway` (Nepal/US)

Aaron Dilloway is an experimental musician. He has been releasing and recording music since the age of 16. He is a former guitarist and tape manipulator for the noise rock band Wolf Eyes, which he left in 2005 to live most of that year in Kathmandu, Nepal. While his wife did her graduate work there, he roamed the streets recording every sound he could, many of which are used in his recent recordings and performances. Currently, he runs the noise record label, record store, and mailorder Hanson Records, which he began in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1994, but has been based in Oberlin, Ohio since February 2008. He performs solo using eight-track tapes and vocal sounds and records modular synthesizer music as Spine Scavenger. Recently, he has played with an ever-changing cast of sound artists under the name The Nevari Butchers.

Ruhail Qaisar (Ladkah, India)

Ruhail Qaisar is a self-taught artist from Ladakh. As a musician, he explores the confines of memory, the dry rot of intergenerational trauma, and the eerie swarms of the human unconscious, incorporating vernacular concepts, poetic gestures, and mangled improvisational chaos.

The work serves to transmit sub-zero sound-collage memoirs based on real-life events and local mythos, as developed through his recollections of growing up in the frontier villages of the Ladakh region located in the high-altitude Himalayas, drones of hauntology disgracefully disturbed with spastic tremors of post-industrial delirium and cruel power-electronics.

His debut album Fatima is out on Danse Noire.

Anil Subba (A.M.U.R.T.A.R.I.T.I) Nepal

Anil Subba is a sound artist, independent curator, and artistic director based in Kathmandu, Nepal. His body of work ranges from various art exhibitions (painting/installation/video/writing) to (collaborative/solo) performances, sound art, and recordings. He is practicing art as a way to investigate his inner perceptions, explore his experimentations and improvisational tendencies, working collaboratively to encourage transdisciplinary art practice and even unexpected possibilities. ‘Amurtariti’ is his artistic name, which combines two words ‘amurta’ and ‘riti’, which refer to abstract and method/ritual/process/memory, respectively. Amurtariti is an influential sound artist and art performer creating and practices ART through sounds and movements in the Himalayan land of Everest, Nepal.
