CHECK OUT: Book, GRRRLPEDIA – An A/Z of Bands with Female Power, Out Now

There is a strong Asian presence in GRRRLPEDIA – An A/Z of Punk Rock and Grunge Bands with Female Power (1990–2026).

It is a global encyclopedia curated by Patrick Poini, collecting the stories of the “girls with guitars”, from well-known bands such as Hole, L7, Babes In Toyland, Bikini Kill and Lunachicks, to hidden gems from around the world.

The significant Asian contingent includes the Burka Band, the brave girls who played in burqas in Kabul between 2002 and 2004; the Indonesian Grrrl Gang; China’s first all-female band Hang on the Box; the Thai phenomenon Itchy Band; the riot grrrl project Literally Anything Before Bros by experienced Turkish musicians; Japan’s most well-known current band Otoboke Beaver; Psychosonique, the first all-female band from Singapore (the book includes an interview with their former bassist Ginette Chittick, also a Subcultural Researcher in punk); the rising Korean band Rumkicks; The Vinyl Records from India; and the latest wild newcomer from Tokyo, Zinchikurandan.

The book also features bands formed by members of Asian origin based in the US (Emily’s Sassy Lime, The Linda Lindas) and in the UK (Yee Loi).

The book is available on Amazon worldwide.
