Formed back in 2010, ATAUD is a London-based South American death/black metal act who released their first demo ‘Macabros Hallazgos’ back in 2012. The band followed up the demo with their debut album ‘Apostasía Absoluta’ in 2015 recording the collection of music at the same studio – Parlor Studios – where bands such as Brujeria, Dimmu Borgir, Napalm Death, among others also recorded their albums.
After a series of independent releases, ATAUD’s sophomore full length ‘Satan’s Vindication’ was released under two record labels, War March in USA and Marwolaeth Records in the UK. Which brings us to the present day with ATAUD adding new guitarist, Glen from Hong Kong, to the lineup. As Unite Asia is a website launched in Hong Kong 8 plus years ago, we had to throw some questions right at Glen to find out how he found his way to ATAUD.
“Well, I’ve been here in London since 2022 and it was only this May that I finally joined the band. I’ve been playing guitar in so many metal bands in Hong Kong like Adversary, Protoss and even guested in a Taiwanese black metal act Requiem on their 2016 Japan tour. People may recognize me from those bands, but in ATAUD I’m actually playing bass. I played bass in a deathgrind band in Hong Kong called Elysium back in 2015. Luckily, when I moved to the UK, I brought my instruments with me, and as fate would have it, it helped bring me to ATAUD.”
As he reflects on his time in London, Glen states, “Actually, I never had any intention of either forming or even joining any bands when I first arrived. I was okay just writing my own music, working on my own solo record playing music along the lines of funeral doom or experimental music. But as it goes, once you’re in the world of death metal, it’s hard to turn back so that’s why I started seeking out ways to be in a metal band here. It was actually quite hard at first because I’m extremely introverted and so it was hard to find members but luckily I met Ruben the drummer who just happened to be working at the same company I was at. He invited me out to watch ATAUD play with a great Colombian band Masacre. I was so surprised and impressed with the bands and a few weeks later I asked him that if the band needed another guitarist or a bassist that I’d be happy to join. A few weeks later I was invited to try out. You know what was the first thing interesting to happen at that practice? We jammed at 8am!”
Since joining, Glen has already taken the stage. “After a few months, thanks to the help of Alex and Andres, I was able to learn the songs from their last full length and then got on stage playing my first gig in Europe ever! We played with two amazing bands from Australia and Brazil – Altars and Fossilization.”
He wraps up, “From my first band Infinity in Hong Kong in the early days, to Adversary, Elysium, Protoss and Requiem, and now composing South American death metal with Ataud, from Hong Kong to Great British…I told myself, This Is Our New Beginning! We are planning to join more gigs, band tours and festivals in the coming years. And certainly if one days the time comes, we must go for an Asian tours, in Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and my home town – Hong Kong for sure!”
