Following the release of their two singles ‘Mister Greeting Card’ and ‘Goodbye’, the Philippine-based indie rock act Spell the Words released their debut EP ‘I Guess I Miscalculated Things’.
Drawn from movies and perspectives, most of the songs in this EP were written during the pandemic. “It was a mixture of numerous experiences and imagination blended into a 5-track EP. Despite being locked up in quarantine, I guess writing these songs put us into different places in our minds.” said Vince Dedace, Spell the Words’ guitarist. By so, the EP creates an image of coming-of-age-like scenes where a plethora of pent-up emotions and experiences from each of the members’ points of view are being defined.
The band also shared some insights on how the EP was produced; “It was definitely not easy for us to make this EP in the current situation that we are in, apart from us living in different cities, there are also many external factors that really challenged our passion, obviously the pandemic, but also other personal stuff that we were going through at the time,” said Deo Guntiñas, the band’s frontman. The band iterated that they had to meet during the weekends since they were all working during the weekdays. “We are thankful to Meow City Records, especially to our producer Zephra Lagos (TIM ÄWÄ) for providing us a haven to pursue this project, and also the snacks were pretty good, shoutouts to BRKFST!”, he added.
This might be Spell the Word’s first EP, but we can definitely say that this was a labor of love. When just going outside is hard enough in itself, we can only imagine the challenges to making all of this possible.
