Filipino genre-defying band Beast Jesus release statement regarding homophobia. The post is poignant as fuck and should be shared by people throughout our continent to begin a conversation amongst your circle of friends to see where everyone stands on the issue of homophobia, transphobia, etc.
“Someone sent me a screencap asking if gay dudes ran this page. Not going to namedrop or anything because this isn’t a personal attack on anyone. We just want to focus on the concern this person raised.
Just to clear things up, we do have a queer member in the band and have always been supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community at large; especially in music and art. For the record, we will always be.
This is nothing to be ashamed of, and I’m happy to see more queer people going to punk shows. Hardcore punk should be for everyone. At least in my experience, hardcore has always been a guiding and positive force in my life.
If queer/trans/non-binary people find a home for themselves in our culture, or better yet, our scene, then we’re all for it. We’ll surround you with good music, friendship, and a space for you to live and grow in.
If you already like/follow bands for their music, art/aesthetics, and lyrical content, then I don’t think anyone’s sexuality is an issue. If you don’t like our more queer-leaning posts/shares, then you’re totally free to unfollow if it makes you uncomfortable. That’s totally cool.
We just don’t think this party is for straight males alone, and the queer community is already misrepresented in the Philippines as is.
If we have any gay people who are getting into aggressive and angular music and are in need of a community, our scene is here for you. I don’t give a fuck what anyone says. You. Are. Welcome.”
