‘Gangrene’ is the third single to be released by new Singaporean blood, metalcore quartet EDEN EYES. Coming from humble beginnings as a cover band in Amplified, the varsity band co-curricular in the National University of Singapore. The band cut its teeth at various school-organised shows, playing heavy covers of Top 40s songs and tunes by bands such as I Prevail, Sleep Token, and Bring Me The Horizon. Their venture into Singapore’s underground scene was enabled by the writing and releasing of their two singles – First Class Horrors and Heartworm.
The soundscape Eden Eyes seeks to achieve is simple: uncompromisingly brutal. Unifying the band’s oeuvre is thematic – the darkness inherent in depression and self-hatred characterises much of the band’s material.
Following up from their two prior singles, Gangrene stands as both a continuation of Eden Eyes’ heavy style but also a point of departure into darker and heavier territory for their new EP to come.
Gangrene embodies the essence of suffering, self-hatred, and depression. Not about any event in particular, its lyrics speak of those moments of depression and impulses of self-harm which come to us in our darkest hour, speaking to us in the back of our minds as we struggle not to give in. Breakdowns abound in the track, with multiple time-signature changes and jarring fluctuations in dynamics engender a sense of unease in listeners. Coupled alongside aggressive drum parts, heavy guitars in G and beyond-harsh vocals, Gangrene leaves audiences disoriented, but headbanging to its undeniably catchy parts.
While the earlier material provided a glimpse into the band’s more melodic style, Gangrene shifts into a more riff-oriented direction, not only showcasing the band’s metal chops more saliently, but aligning Eden Eyes with other modern metal acts like Knocked Loose, 156/Silence, and thrown. Gangrene hopes to contribute to the dark themes which characterise the band’s oeuvre, while also allowing it to move in a heavier direction than that which had come before.
