Vietnamese Crossover Thrash Band Drop Pikachu – Get Serious On New Album [Vietnam]

Brilliant Vietnamese crossover thrash band CUT LON have surprisingly made the conscious decision to drop the infamous Pikachu masks. When we contacted the band, they responded, “It just doesn’t match what our music and lyrical content is about anymore. So we’ve taken them off”.

One listen to the band’s second full length, it is incredibly clear that the band has upped the ante in their music. The immediate feeling we get upon hearing the first track is “epic”. Yes, the thrashy elements are still there and those sick vocals are still there. But there is a whole layer of soundscapes and musical elements (like a heavy dose emotional melody, some metallic hardcore, and skramz style vocals even) have changed the landscape for the band. “There’s no concrete answer for why we’ve stopped doing the Pikachu shtick. It was just an organic realization that those costumes no longer suited us.  We still have all the irony and playfulness in the new music, we just think the music is solid enough to be enjoyed by our true selves and we no longer need a gimmick of sorts,” states the band in reflection.

What’s especially sick is that even though the band has established themselves as a must-see band in the SE Asian region, they still hold true to singing in Vietnamese. “On this new release we use lyrics to support the vibe of each song to match the instruments. It’s more like a poetry in that sense – it doesn’t necessarily make logical sense, but it is just beautiful on its own and it opens the path for interpretations depending on the listener. But this makes it difficult to translate into other languages.”

Respect.
