Flying Daggers are a four-piece art rock/indie band based in Hong Kong. The band is a mixture of indie rock energy and a post-punk way of expressing emotions through music. Their debut EP, “Man is Man’s Worst Enemy”, a six-track indie rock essay on being disappointed with yourself and other humans and learning to love life again, was released in 2020 via Italian independent label Bulbart. Now, after a harsh period of silence due to the Covid pandemic and lineup changes, they’re back with new music.
“Don’t Ignore the Dragon” EP was recorded back in 2021 at Sunset Studio, with Adrien Thai on drums and Vojta Havrda adding saxophone, but with no live music in Hong Kong due to restrictions, it had to wait for the right time to see the light of day. Lyrically, it’s very much inspired by some of the themes from Buddhist writings. Each of the four songs examines different aspects such as fading pleasures, fighting ‘pain that doesn’t hurt’, looking for harmony in life, while being a slave of the brain and incapable of ‘letting go’, dealing with anger and frustrations of everyday life, which essentially transform into our inner ‘dragon’, the EP’s title character, that, if ignored, can “eat you alive”. Apart from Buddhist influences, we can also hear about the problem of ‘tribalism’ in modern society, further fueled by Covid and the economic crisis. “Tacoma Bridge” on the other hand, turns out to be a bit unconventional take on a ‘love song’. In terms of the sound of the record, it’s probably what you could get if you mixed The Bravery with Blur, with a bit of Stereolab, The Sound, and Fontaines DC.
Check out a brand new Taiwanese hardcore band called GUNPOINT, who’ve just dropped their debut demo ‘Don’t Ever Stop Moving’. The band were kind enough to send us some...
