Summa Li of Escharotic
“Unfortunately, it is common for people to assume that women’s accounts of harassment come from a place of hysteria and hypersensitivity, versus the responses by their male colleagues that for the most part, are perceived as ‘the truth’” – especially within a male-dominated musical genre and culture.”

The Women of Hong Kong’s Metal Underground Keeping Diversity Alive
Hong Kong | Metal
For anyone involved with heavy music anywhere in the world, one of our main grievances will always be why there isn’t enough diversity in our community. A mainly masculine world seems to always be the one running the show, selling merch, watching the door, performing, doing sound/lighting. So when there are women (or other minorities) on stage, it always feels like a breath of fresh air, some much needed energy being injected into the scene. We are always eager to read lyrics written by women to see/hear their perspective on things that they have to deal with that turn out to be a massive wake up call/educational experience for us men who will never understand.
“Daddy, Daddy if I was raped would you wanna know where I walked?
Would you wanna know what I wore?
Would you wanna know who he was?
What if I was 30 or 12? What if I had one drink?
If the victim is your daughter, does that complicate the blaming?”
– Say It by War On Women
In Hong Kong where money is all that matters, we too have a select few diehard women involved in metal who keep it alive, who keep our music continuing to progress and move forward. Below are just a few of these incredible women.
Go check out the music and more importantly have a conversation with your friends about what you’re doing to make sure that the door to this world of metal, hardcore and punk rock is always open to anyone and everyone.

How did you get into metal?
When I was in college one of my friends introduced A7X (Avenged Sevenfold) to me and then I started to get into heavy music. Actually I was listening to Jrock (e.g. the Gazatte) ( I am never a Cantopop music lover since I was born lol ) before knowing about heavy music. But even now I still listen to Jrock/ post rock/ math rock just not only heavy music
What are some bands that inspire you?
Definitely Epica and Nightwish. I really appreciate how their music sounds so epic.
Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with metal?
Alissa White Gluz of Arch Enemy. Her vocals are super strong and clear even when screaming.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
It’s just not very popular here at all. I think the music industry here continues to be very closed to anything heavy, because pop music is what Hongkong-ers only listen to. However, I do have to say that in recent years there seems to be a change in a lot of the day to day Hongkongers. They seem to be a lot more open-minded now than before. Well, at least more of them are willing to listen to louder music nowadays and that’s already a HUGE improvement. hahaha…
Actually before answering this question, we better define what heavy music is. Heavy music constitutes anything from metalcore to metal to hardcore, and if we’re talking about just metal there are complete genres under each of the sub-genres like heavy metal, glam metal, death metal and progressive metal etc. If I’m being honest, in terms of heavy music in Hong Kong, the indie/mainstream crowd seems to steers towards core stuff.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
It’s a difficult question to answer. To be honest, it’s hard to inspire more women to be a part of this. Not many girls would like to be involved in heavy music especially in Hong Kong where people here are so conservative. Hong Kong girls usually have a deep misunderstanding of heavy music and consider it all to be loud and “not appropriate” for women, but actually some types of metal like gothic/symphonic metal can be very soft and heart-warming. So by introducing some softer metal to them maybe we can inspire Hong Kong girls to at least start listening to it first.
What are some Hong Kong bands that you want people to know about?
Of course my band Amnesia! You better check us out! If you are interested in Hong Kong metal bands with female members, I would recommend Chimeras, Ancient Spirit and Escharotic.

How did you get into metal?
The first metal band I discovered was Mayhem. It was a live performance at Wacken in 2004. After that I started searching and discovering more heavy metal bands, especially death metal. I love aggressive deep growling vocals. Like a voice which comes crawling out of the bowels of hell. Of course with strong and powerful blast beats. I think I’m really because of that early introduction to metal music, I’ve been addicted ever since.
What are some bands that inspire you?
The inspiration comes from bands like Mayhem, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Death, Meshuggah, Disgorge, Cannibal Corpse, The Faceless, Helloween, In This Moment…
Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with metal?
Yes, of course. The one and only Angela Gossow. I still remember the first time I heard her voice, it was mind blowing. I couldn’t believe women could growl like that. Even though she’s no longer performing and in fact she’s working more on the management side of things like managing Arch Enemy, there is still so much to learn from her. She is definitely the who has inspired me the most.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
I think Hong Kong has a lot of great musicians and bands. However, I’m still looking forward to seeing more women to be involved with heavy music. Also, I think we need more opportunities to play and promote our music in other countries.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
For me, I’ll keep creating metal music and being a part of Synergy. I want to inspire more women to become a part of this scene. Especially to let them know that metal is not just a male thing. We can also scream like the devil and be as good as what guys do. And you should shine in your own way. So rise, metal girls power! \m/
What are some Hong Kong bands that you want people to know about?
I think we can find a lot of amazing bands in Hong Kong with different styles. My recommendation will be Indenial and Karmacipher.

How did you get into metal?
I’ve been listening for a while now. When I was 13/14 years old some of my friends at school introduced me to bands like Muse, Green Day, and Linkin Park. After that I started spending most of my time on YouTube looking for some other bands. The first metal band that I actually heard was As I Day Dying. You know there are always times in one’s life where they feel like they’re not going to make it through, the moment I saw the titled Through Struggle on a recommendation list, I had to PLAY immediately. That’s how my journey into metal began. As I Lay Dying is still my all time favorite band. So glad that Hidden Agenda were able to bring them here a few years ago.
What are some bands that inspire you?
There are soooo many good bands. As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Linkin Park are some of my teenage favorites. In terms of local bands I still vividly remember seeing a poster at Tom Lee 7 or 8 years ago, it was a local show and that’s when I first started listening to some local bands like Shepherds the Weak, Maniac, Evocation, Massacre of Mothman, etc. All these bands inspired me a LOT.
Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with metal?
Yea. There are quite a lot of awesome female musicians who play heavy music. Personally I think that female musicians actually present heavy music in a different way. Some examples could be Arch Enemy, Epica, Lacuna Coil, etc. Their involvement brings new elements to the music. Other than vocals, female guitarists and drummers who do great covers on YouTube also inspire me.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
I would say that heavy music lovers are certainly the minority. And, people who actually go attend shows featuring heavy bands are an even tinier minority within that minority. There is only a small group of people who have made watching shows a part of their daily lives. It’s hard. It’s not that we don’t like heavy music, sometimes we simply don’t have enough energy and time to spend on it. Therefore it’s not easy to promote heavy music and also to play or to listen to heavy music here.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
Guys could invite their girlfriends to their band practices and shows! Haha…I guess one way would be to introduce bands with women as vocalists. This could be a good starting point for females to start listening to heavy music.
What are some Hong Kong bands that you want people to know about?
I would say that all bands can be good. No matter if you play music or not, wandering on YouTube or Spotify or IndieCast is a great journey. It’s always cool to explore music written by different people and who knows you might ‘sync’ with a certain type of a song.
Hong Kong Heavy Music Pit Boss
Meme Liu
* Meme doesn’t necessarily play in a band – but is a passionate member of our little extreme music community often standing right in the front losing her mind. As a band on stage with her standing right in the front instigating a mosh, it is one of the best things to see and people to have at your shows. She rules!
How did you get into metal/punk/hardcore?
For metal, started listening to black metal when I met some people who were playing in a band in GuangZhou. Then I tried out other subgenres such thrash, death, gothic, folk, doom, sludge etc. For punk, I used to have a friend that introduced me to bands like Black Flag, New York Dolls, and Dead Kennedys etc. Then recent years I started to listen to more grindcore and crust punk/d-beat, such as pisschrist, dishammer, disrupt etc.
What are some bands that inspire you?
I would consider Judas Priest to be an inspiring band. When I was working part-time in a restaurant, tired, mopping the floors, I heard the one song that was so refreshing and gave me energy to power through. It was the song” Breaking the Law” by Judas Priest.
Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with heavy music?
I personally don’t focus too much on the gender of the bands, instead I just focus on the music. If the music is good, it’s good. Of course it would be very noticeable when there’s a beautiful woman playing in band. But I do have a favorite female musician in metal, her name is Mallika, and she does vocals in a band called Abnormality. She’s brilliant and her vocals are very powerful.
Here she is with Mallika!
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
My thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong…Hmm, I would say it’s still trying to survive. There is a lack of diversity in underground music, especially for extreme music. But mostly I think the environment in Hong Kong makes underground music very hard to survive, especially when the government does not support alternative art.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
In my opinion I think there’s no absolute way to inspire women to be involved in heavy music. It would be great if metal musicians were more balanced in terms of having a balance between genders, but for now I think it’s best for things to take it’s natural course. Nowadays there are more and more women and even children who are getting involved in heavy music.
What are some Hong Kong bands that you want people to know about?
Hong Kong bands such as 惨惨猪 and Evocation are very representative of Hong Kong culture and society. So these two bands I would recommend people try out.

How did you get into metal?
When I was a student my friends and I were super bored in the classroom one day so showed me her favorite band Evanescence. Right after that I searched hard for that type of music and eventually I was able to find some. I got so addicted that I would often play the music and sing loudly at home. After awhile further curiosity drove me to want to join a band that covered Evanescence songs. Then of course it was going down the same road as many people who first start playing in bands by covering the must-cover-songs such as Metallica, Sum 41, My Chemical Romance, etc. It certainly helped me grow my personal music library. After all that is when I started to get into heavier stuff like Symphony X, Arch Enemy, Trivium, Slipknot, Lamb of God, etc.
What are some bands that inspire you?
Otep, Arch Enemy, The Agonist, Lamb of God.
Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with metal?
Every single woman involved in metal inspires me. As a vocalist myself, it is especially female vocalists who inspire me the most.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is such a damn commercial place…the pressure and stress is so high here for everything. Due to this, people who live here just don’t have time to really try to discover their true love, passion and hobbies. Instead, they’re just spoon fed bullshit daily through entertainment sources and mass media. I honestly think this is one of the main reasons heavy music will always remain so underground.
Having said that, I think due to the internet allowing us to be able to provide more platforms and forms of media to the every day person, it seems it is easier now for different forms of music to be exposed worldwide.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
Music is infectious. We’re all just doing our best at every chance we get. Maybe one way could be to do more collaborations/features between Hong Kong and other Asian metal bands. This way maybe we can create something new and inspiring.
For any woman out there that is still worrying about wasting their time on something like this – here’s a great quote to live by:

How did you get into the metal?
When I was about 13 I had a computer and the internet was my only entertainment. Back then there wasn’t really a culture of pirating music so it was mainly through software like WinMX that I’d find stuff. My friends and I got to know different types of bands simply peer to peer sharing. I still remember that when I first heard screaming, I tried to do it on the streets. It was like a calling and I still remember those days. The idea of screaming on a street is like a pack of wolves howling in the night. I do it as a way to look after my pack. I never minded how people saw me back then walking down the street, and I’m still the same way today. Just maybe a little more restrained.
What are some bands that inspire you?
At first, it was Japanese rock or visual rock bands that I had heard of (X Japan, Hide, Dir en grey, MUCC, etc.,), I was seeking something unique – something beautiful both visually and musically. I wanted some range in music that could go from being poignant to outright strange. My musical taste moved on to goth bands like After Forever, Epica, Lacrimosa, Nightwish. What got me into gothic music was the movie The Phantom of the Opera which gave me the overall sense of layers of consciousness, a bottomless feeling. While getting into goth, I also listened to a lot of black metal and death metal Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Otep, Hed pe, Deftones. Then it came time for rebellion which for me was my golden period of my musical journey as I got deep into nu metal, rap metal, hardcore, metalcore, screamo, etc. and I listened to a lot of underground experimental music. As I listened to it it would conjour up all this sickness trapped within in my body regarding the life of my city that I always tried to control. If I didn’t have this outlet I can safely say that I would currently be a psychopath. Last but not least, I got into bands like Maximum the Hormone, Man with a Mission, Dragon Ash, Rize, The Bonez, Wanima, these bands gave me positivity, that brought me out of the darkness into the light. I got into Pizza of Death Records (label that is owned by Hi-Standard) a few years ago and I like most of their bands. It’s these bands that inspire my current band K Scope.
Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with metal?
I don’t really care about whether a musician is female or male, it’s just gender after all. People who inspire me are the ones who allow me to see both sides that can coexist – the masculine side of femininity and vice versa. It’s a balance that I can apply to anything.
If I’m forced to mention one name it’d have to be Otep Shamaya.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
Well, most of us here are heavily influenced by foreign bands. Hong Kong is really full of a lot of negativity, so I always hope that more Hong Kong heavy bands will speak up for our city. Whatever it is that they want to sing about. Also, I really think it’s important that we consider the language we use. Cantonese is most interesting to me.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
This question reminds me all my experience both performing and observing shows. Hong Kong females are mainly smaller in body type so when people are moshing, circle pitting, wall of death, etc, it truly scares a lot of them. But I really want them to know that these types of interactions shouldn’t be feared. It is part of the show and the overall experience between band and audience.
What are some Hong Kong bands that you want people to know about?
It seems that Hong Kong has a lot more challenges for our bands. We have issues with space, venues, the pressures/stresses of daily life. A lot of these things lead our bands to give up. But it’s one of those situations that the longer we persist playing music the more others will hear us. Life integrated with music, music integrated with life, both of these sayings are necessary.

How did you get into metal?
I started going to local metal shows in my hometown when I was 15. The energy and passion that everyone had really blew me away. It was a really small scene and the shows were almost an hour drive each way but we all supported each other. I didn’t have many friends in high school; I was always considered to be socially awkward since I’m quite introverted and overly shy, so going to shows was kind of an outlet where I could just be myself and meet other like-minded people.

What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
I think over the years, the scene has really come together. I remember when I first moved here 6 years ago, I was able to go to the first Metal Alliance show at Hidden Agenda which was awesome. Now, shows are becoming more inclusive but I remember if it wasn’t for my ex colleague who was already in the scene, (Danny from Weeper), I wouldn’t have found out about all of the band shows in Hong Kong. Unless you know someone who is already part of the scene, it was almost impossible to find these shows by yourself, especially if you’re not local. Now, it’s becoming more promoted throughout Hong Kong which is awesome because it’s really opening up the shows to more people who might not have even known there was a scene in Hong Kong.
I do think, however one thing we should all be more supportive of is about actually supporting local bands by paying to attend their shows and not always try to get a ‘free pass’ just because we know the organizer, band or have a friend working the event. The scene is small, so it’s no surprise we all know each other, but it’s also important to remember that we need to keep the scene alive by supporting the efforts of everyone, not just by attending but by paying tribute to the efforts as well.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
First and foremost, be more inclusive and supportive of female artists. Appreciate them for their talents and efforts just like you would for men. There’s a lot of sexism, double standards and belittlement of women in the scene, not just in Hong Kong, but worldwide. Maybe it’s not always intentional but it’s still there from comments like, “She plays good for a woman,” to only focusing on their physical features and over sexualizing them with your mates.

How did you get into heavy music?
When I was little, my music taste was mainly centered around my older sister as well as the regular mainstream radio stuff. Then somehow I got exposed to some early pop punk bands. When I heard that it felt so different than what I was usually exposed to. So I was intrigued and started spending some time digging into this world of music through local bands like Maniac and TieShuLan. Then later I got into foreign bands like Sum 41, Bullet For My Valentine and Slipknot. I was so into this music that I decided that I wanted to start creating music like this so I started playing drums and forming my own bands.

Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with heavy music?
There are a handful. But Larissa Stupar, ex-frontwoman of WolfxDown, current vocalist of Venom Prison, was the first woman who blew my fucking mind several years ago when her previous band came through Hong Kong. Her live presence was dynamic and crazy, which was no “weaker” than compared to any male frontman. She’s also inspiring through her lyrics. When she was in WolfxDown her lyrics were more direct and now in Venom Prison they are much more political and socially aware.
Another person is the vocalist of my own band Die!ChiwawaDie! Jinbo, who’s also the mastermind of Qiii Snacks Records. Even though we’re in a band together and I might be a little bias, she’s a huge inspiration to me. She takes music very seriously and is also devoted to the music scene. Not only playing in bands of her own, but also promoting good underground music in China.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
There are actually tons of underground heavy bands in Hong Kong. Some of them are niche, some of them are more mature, but regardless they’re all pretty unknown even locally here. For example, I would say that I go to quite a lot of local shows here but even with going as often as I do, I only know a tiny portion of the heavy bands here. Having said that, the scene a few years ago seemed a lot more healthy but for some reason or another it started to fizzle out. Nevertheless, the scene this past year seems to be back and flourishing again. There are a lot of really good promoters like Infree Records and the upcoming Detuned Radio Festival. Some, there are some new venues that have popped up which is of course a good sign for our local heavy music scene.

What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
My personal feeling after seeing Synergy and Escharotic supporting Tumour Boy a few weeks ago, both of the singer from the two bands were amazing, which take the already good music to the next level. Many of the audience have a good feedback about them. That will for sure, attracts more female to get involved to the heavy music scene gradually. Holding shows with more bands with female member(s) might be helpful. Inviting those bands not because they have got female member(s) but their music is equally good with other bands. Hopefully to let women know that the music scene is not just a “Boy-Club” thing.

When I was in college I spent most of my time on Youtube. While on there I became a huge fan of a Japanese visual band called The Gazette. I actually wasn’t really that sure that I liked their over aesthetic, but I loved their music and their live show. Later on I kept searching for other similar styles of music and even more extreme heavy music. I think it was this process of searching that really got me into metal.
What are some bands that inspire you?

Are there any women out there who inspire you to keep being involved with metal?
Alissa White-Gluz, the former vocalist of The Agonist, and now Arch Enemy. It’s definitely her amazing stage show and her incredible singing technique that has made her one of the most well known front-women in metal.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
There are many heavy metal bands in Hong Kong who are mainly trapped in their practice room/studio. Most of them don’t get that many opportunities to perform. There’s a huge lack of live venues as well as organizers here. Even if we had more access to these things I think extreme music is just not generally accepted in Hong Kong.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
I don’t think we need to specify whether a vocalist is female or male. In the era we live in now there is a lot more gender equality not just in music but other aspects such as sports and business – it is certainly becoming obvious that females play an equally important role as men. The main thing I’m concerned about is how to maintain someone’s passion towards heavy music in Hong Kong especially for those who haven’t experienced a live show yet. We need more shows and make better use of social media to get the word out to the general public outside of our underground community.

Sometimes separating music into “heavy” or “non-heavy” is quite boring. It would be great if more were willing to experiment with different sounds instead of making certain tones fit a certain genre tag.

How did you get into metal?
When I first played in bands I met some metal guys, we tried to figure out what we could do bring a woman together with metal. Back then I didn’t know anything about metal at the time – I just knew about bands like Korn and Slipknot. So these guys introduced me to Nightwish. This is the band that got me fully into female-fronted bands. I was surprised and found female-fronted metal scene is actually pretty damn huge!

I love when bands add different types of elements to their music like how Dark Moor added some neo-classical. They were the best at doing that! The melancholy mood of Draconian, Avant-garde and incredible female voice of Atrox, and many others like Distant Dream, Otep, Angtoria, Lumsk, Heaven shall burn, La’mule…

Sarah Jezebel Deva, no matter her incredible vocal range as a backing vocalist in COF, or in her own project, Angtoria, which is where she went back to her natural voice, being the original her. The song “That’s what the wise lady said” motivated me to keep breathing, helps me win the war in my head.
What are your thoughts about heavy music in Hong Kong?
They are a group of fighters with unique thoughts, independent behaviour, swimming against the stream, although there’s not many opportunities here, but I believe we are writing a brand new page of heavy music, which is not found in the existing pages of Wikipedia.
What could we do to inspire more women to be involved with heavy music in Hong Kong?
I think it is all about her own character, if she likes heavy music, life will guide her into that world step by step. But the most important thing is to let them know that they should do what they want, be whatever they wish to be. If you want that lifestyle, just do it and you don’t need to care about what others say! It’s easy to find women with masculine power and thoughts of feminism in heavy music scenes all over the world.
What are some Hong Kong bands that you want people to know about?
