Stoked to have a brand new zine out in the world that features our Asian bands and captures cool short recaps of the current state of various hardcore scenes around Asia. The zine is called 185 MILES SOUTH OF SOMEWHERE and is put together by Zack Nelson who was kind enough to send in the following info to understand his inspiration for pooling all of this together.
“Since Hardcore’s post-Covid explosion, the landscape has completely changed. It seems like so many bands are facing outward, trying to catch a piece of internet hype or national success when the roots of Hardcore are always local. Look at any HC band who’s ever been about anything and they will have a deep connection to their hometown or region. When I say Stoke-on-Trent, what do you think of? I doubt it’s their pottery manufacturing. The ‘80s NYC Hardcore bands rode so hard for their scene that they created a whole subgenre. Oh yea, and there’s this one town 60 Miles North of Los Angeles that you may have heard of.
I wanted to dive back into the localities – the unique regions which at one time made Hardcore Punk have so much personality.
Including Asian countries in the fanzine and several Asian bands in the compilation was a no brainer. The tale of worldwide Hardcore simply cannot be told without including Asia. Of course, Japan’s history and influence goes without saying and has been documented extensively. In the fanzine, we also cover Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, and China. For the compilation, we included Chain Ov Dogs from Nepal, Deviare from Singapore, House Arrest from Indonesia, The Rebel Riot from Myanmar, and Dummy Toys from China. The Deviare song is my favorite on the compilation.”
Zack even sent in a few exclusive pages for us to check out, but y’all should DEFINITELY be grabbing your own copy of this which you can order HERE. Further below please check out a sick comp/mix tape released by REBIRTH RECORDS that was released along with the zine – further below.
Mad thank you to Zack for sending all this info and more importantly, putting this together to help spark some interest in lesser known communities around the world.
RESPECT.
