Unsurprisingly given the current situation and reports, Singapore grindcore band Wormrot has canceled their upcoming US tour. The band had this to say:
“Due to the current political climate and numerous bands being turned away at US customs, we felt it was not worth the risk coming to America without the right paperwork, which is expensive. Therefore we truly apologize that we must postpone our US tour until next year when we can focus on a full length tour with all the right papers.
We regret that we came to a decision this late, one month to the start of the tour. Once again, we apologize to everyone who are affected.”
It goes without say that there has been numerous reports of people being denied entry into the US, being detained, handcuffed, having their phones forcibly unlocked so they can search through their social media, etc. There have even been reports about bands who DO have the proper paperwork/visas to legally perform in the country, yet have been detained and then rejected entry into the country.
We fully support Wormrot’s decision to cancel the tour because of the uncertainties of what will happen at immigration. If any of you have been detained or removed from a flight simply based on your ethnicity or a “feeling” you give a fellow passenger, you know that this is a scarring experience that you would not want on your worst enemy.
Best of luck to the band!
