“Their name comes from a song of the same title from the legendary Canadian punk band Propagandhi, inspired by its meaningful message of dissent against abusive authority and governance over the people.”
RESPECT.
It’s been a LONG time since we’ve received a submission from a band that is 100% outwardly political and socially conscious. Once upon a time, this was a given. There was a period of time that every punk and hardcore band were involved in socio-politics in some form or another. Nowadays, it’s hard to figure out what stances bands actually have. The “harder” the music doesn’t necessarily mean they’re more militant in their activism, for example. The sheer VOLUME of submissions from “hardcore” bands whose sole information is “New EP, sounds like XXX” and that’s it – is insane. We actually have to reply and say, which seems crazy, “What are your songs about?” Like why isn’t this MORE important than your fucking music?
Anyway…the Philippines punk scene has birthed a new political punk band called COMPLY/RESIST who’ve just dropped their debut 3 song demo. “Comply/Resist delivers a message against abusive authority through its lyrical themes of collective action, resistance against fascism and genuine liberation of the oppressed, while fusing it with fast, aggressive, yet dynamic music structures as expressed through this particular release. Struggle develops compliance into resistance, as resistance complies with the historical development of struggle — towards overturning the current social triangle.”
