The Bangkok independent music scene has faced a multitude of challenges over the past few years. From strict military governments using the police to shut down events, to the onslaught of capitalism closing venues to make way for ever more shopping malls, the small scene struggles on.
Shot over several gigs through July to September 2018, Bangkok Indie gives a snapshot view into the lives of some of the musicians that come from all over the world and call Bangkok home.
What motivates the musicians, promoters, and venue owners to continue to support this local scene? Are there careers to be made? How is the music perceived culturally? And when will Bangkok invest in some decent stage monitors? These are just some of the questions addressed in this look into the highs and lows of a scene that is as magic as it is frustrating and Bangkok’s immense potential for creative growth.
