Man…no one does it better in Asia.
Malaysia has birthed yet another insanely emotional skramz act – Nonpareil…we love the way the band self-describes their music as “flowerviolence” (Maybe it’s an actual thing? Let us know!)…it seems to fit the emotionality perfectly – those broken chords, frantic drum patterns, melancholic vibes, throat-shredding vocals…it just fits so well. Can’t believe these are just demo tracks – someone needs to put this out on a 7″ asap.
Nonpareil were kind enough to give us tons more info about the band – they even helped answer our “flowerviolence” question above!
“The band was formed in 2018 with a different name — “émile”. We wrote some songs and tried putting up a proper demo but then Covid came. After a long break, we started rehearsing again and with a change of line up we came up with the name Nonpareil. We are heavily influenced by European skramz/screamo/emo but have always been inspired by Malaysian bands like Kias Fansuri, Piri Reis, and Halal to name a few.
“The term “flowerviolence” was first used by State Fault if we are not mistaken, we like how it echoes with the groove and undertones of the music we create.
Lyrically (and musically — which is noticeable) we write sad songs; songs about grievance over the loss of loved-ones (during the song Kian Hilang was written we have lost our beloved family members and a good friend) and also, self-reflection.
At the moment, we are self-releasing our music but would definitely look forward to working with labels who are down to help us get our music out there!”
