“The performance of the Cambodian band Doch Chkae at Wacken Open Air 2019 was definitely no ordinary concert: The band was supposed to play at the W:O:A 2018 already, but was denied entry because the requirements for a visa could not be met.
A big wave of solidarity made it possible to make up for this missed chance at the next festival and fly the band to Germany for not only one but multiple concerts. For the young musicians from a slum in Phnom Penh this gig turned into a giant triumph.
But the situation in their home country is still difficult for many children and young people.
Doch Chkae has learned how music and especially metal can not only serve as an outlet for their anger, fear, and pain, but also how meaningful and liberating it is to express oneself musically.
Together with the NGO Moms Against Poverty, the organization that liberated the boys from the slums, the young musicians developed a great concept for a musical school. In various workshops, the musicians now want to help other kids and young people and to share their experiences.
Together with social workers and the NGO Moms Against Poverty Cambodia we and the Wacken Foundation collect donations for these projects.
We are happy about every help for this project, even the smallest donation helps!
A donation receipt can be issued by the Wacken Foundation on request.”
