There are very rare times that “we” get to break character on this site…this is one of those moments. I run this website by myself and have been doing it as a one-man show since I started this in 2015. As many of you know, the sole reason this site was started was because I just wanted (yearned) people to know about the insanely talented bands that inhabit Asia. At the time I was touring all over the place with my band KING LY CHEE and whenever I shared content through my own personal socials, people outside of Asia were like, “Damn! I wish I knew about these guys!”.
One of those bands that boggles my mind that the entire planet isn’t talking about – is Philippines band TYPECAST. Dudes are already bonafide legends in their country AND with the Filipino community all over planet earth. But they really should be up there in your general understanding of great bands from out here in Asia.
The band has just dropped their first single in 5 long ass years…and goddamn, what a track it is. The band has always balanced the post hardcore tag with beautifully melodic/alt rock sounding elements, but on this single they just leaned hard into the post hardcore world. The sonic layers themslves are crazy…it just sounds like there are a mountain of guitars. Vocalist Steve shared, “I’ve been listening to a lot of music from sadcore, shoegaze to metal (doom, death and even slam). The sound on this track is a mix of all of those”. DAYUM – that explains a lot. The guitars themselves seem they’ve all been intentionally tuned down as well to bring that doomy/gloomy vibe to the song [UPDATE: They were! Drop A fools!]. But it’s Steve’s gorgeous vocals (as usual) that just sets them high above the rest. “When the pandemic hit, we put everything on hold to focus on our health and personal lives. This is our first track that we’re sharing off our upcoming full length. The song is about apathy, but I always love when listeners come up with their own interpretation of our music”.
He was also kind enough to share that the band has massive plans to celebrate their 25th anniversary – which is this year including a vinyl release of the record ‘The Infatuation is Always There”.
