Worldwide – we’d have to say straight edge seems to be a dying breed – so it’s sick to hear about newly formed straight edge bands especially from other parts of the world. Enter Filipino straight edge hardcore band FIGURE OUT dropping their debut EP ‘Train of Thought’. Not only does the music have a sick NYHC style of groove to the tracks, but they were also kind enough to send us a track by track breakdown. As you’ll see through their own words – they’re a band with a lot to say. As it should be.
Remind
This song is a soft nudge to those veering away from what hardcore and punk was originally about – songs about struggles, specially of those in the minority sectors. Never forget, time to remind.
A Choice
A straight edge song about seeing through the “drinker = bad person” stereotype. One can be sober but be an asshole/problematic; One can be a drinker but the kindest person you’ll ever meet.
Ideation
A feeling a lot of millennials and the younger generations feel, maybe from societal pressure or other factors. That feeling of ideating about not existing. Not necessarily dying, but just being not there.
Figure Out
Hardcore’s been around for over 30 years. Slogans and platitudes are plenty, so this question asks if you really understood what these words are about are you just following trends. Is that your thought or just what you heard? Think for yourself. Break free.
EACH
Every Action Can Help. Enough said.
Garden of Us
The hardcore community is a garden. The soil is the past, lessons from those before us. What will bloom from this seed, this potential, if the soil is dull or in other words, have no substance? This is the critical question of this song.
