POST HARDCORE
What a treat this for us here at Unite Asia. We have been huge supporters of Singaporean post hardcore band CARACAL forever and so for the band to choose our platform to launch their brand new album with an EXCLUSIVE video premiere on our site is so incredible…
Go enjoy this write up and smash that play button further below…the band RULES.
“Following a global pandemic that brought the band’s activities to a screeching halt, Singapore-based post-hardcore group, Caracal, quietly watched the world from the shadows of isolation, as it became figuratively and literally engulfed in flames.
Re-emerging with fangs bared, the band unravels years of silent seething and introspection on its third LP, Effigies. A furious indictment of the pursuit and abuse of power, and the consequences for those who lack it, Caracal constructs symbols of personal and communal ire across the album’s eight songs, built up only to be burned down in ritualistic defiance.
Adopting the voices of oppressed and oppressor; prey and predator; casualty and authority, the band characterizes opposing perspectives with unbridled tension, dissonance, and aggression.
While the band’s 2018 release, Take It Apart and Put It Back Together, delivered a sonic assault with the blunt force of a sledgehammer, Effigies takes a calculated approach to its biting critique like a dagger – shrouded in textures, unpredictable time signatures, and vocal layers that suspend the listener in anticipation, only to be thrust into a cacophony of danger when least expected.
Constantly pushing and pulling between moments of chaos and calm, Effigies is a road trip through a world on the brink of collapse. Traversing scenes of war, environmental disaster, and civil unrest, it is punctuated by muted moments of loss, mourning, and regret. It is Caracal at its most incendiary, yet most contemplative. Despite the palpable atmosphere of rage and grief, the journey is littered with traces of hope; rays of light breaking through blinding smoke that hint at a better world.
