YOOOOOOO…a week after the Philippines erupted in protests against rampant corruption, New York City hardcore band MATERIAL SUPPORT drop the first of 3 releases called ‘Philippines History’. The music, streaming below, speaks for itself – straight up hardcore punk, but when you click open the lyrics on bandcamp, it makes even more sense. Such a DOPE idea…
Here’s the band themselves who so kindly sent us more detailed information:
“We released the “Philippine History EP” as Part 1 of 3 of an album we have been writing for many years based off the book “Philippine Society and Revolution” by Amado Guerrero. PSR is a guiding text for the National Democratic movement of the Philippines to study the country’s history and society in order to determine the theories and strategies for revolution and free the country from its three basic problems of imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat capitalism. We want to interpret the text through our music, and popularize revolutionary theory because we’re living in a time when the world is on fire, the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer. But we can’t succumb to hopelessness. We have to get back to the basics: study our history and society in order to change it.
In the diaspora in the U.S., there are millions of Filipinos who have been forced to migrate because of rampant poverty and because our home country’s government profits off the remittances we send back home from working abroad. And now Filipinos and other migrants of color are facing systematic criminalization and deportation by the Trump administration. We see our struggle here in the U.S. as linked to the issues at home and want to build movements around the world to resist systems of exploitation. We hope our music inspires others to build movements where people are treated with dignity and not as expendable commodities. Please anticipate the next parts of our album!”
Respect.
