Hong Kong metal vocalist Buffy SlayHer’s other passion Roller Derby have announced this year’s first event set for June 17 in Hong Kong. The organization is a wonderful group of women who have come together to introduce roller derby to the people of Hong Kong. Here’s the organization’s own mission statement:
“Hong Kong’s Roller Derby League is an all-female non-profit organization owned and operated by the skaters, for the skaters. Everyone will share in the decision making process. Our primary goals are to learn, play, and promote women’s flat track roller derby. We wish to bring roller derby into our community through the dedication of our time, energy and passion for the sport. Through our hard work and determination, we will create and keep our league operating smoothly and effectively for years to come. We welcome all who are dedicated and willing to join us, and learn all they can about the incredible sport of Women’s Roller Derby.”
They’ve introduced Roller Derby in the following manner:
“Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short jams in which both teams designate a scoring player (the “jammer”) who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst hindering the opposing jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Roller Derby is an international sport played by all-female amateur teams. Hong Kong is one of the few places left yet to have an established league recognized by WFTDA. Let’s work together to change that!”
Their first event for 2017 looks like it’s going to be an amazing time so make sure to check it out if you’re in Hong Kong! All the details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1240708282693458/
