Emo Band THE BENEFICIAL SOCIETY Release Fullset Video [China]

As with countless Mineral, Cap’n Jazz, and American Football DIY gigs in the 90s, bands brought their instruments to a friend’s house or basement and proceeded to bop their heads to the music with a drunken crowd — if you’ve always been If you’ve always swooned over those blurry 90’s videos of bands playing, you shouldn’t miss this show. There are no tickets, no stage, no sound reinforcement, and no hassle of getting a gig approved. There were just loud guitars, gut-busting vocals and high-speed drum rhythms – and complaints from neighbours about the noise.—— lomo, drummer of THE BENEFICIAL SOCIETY
Consisting of five 18-year-olds, The Beneficial Society (TBS) is an emerging post-hardcore/emo/art-rock band based in Hangzhou, China. Three months after forming, they launched the band with a gig in an empty room in an office building, with the support of the local shoegaze quarter, the howling howlings.

The show was organised and promoted by the local DIY label, HAPPY RECORDS, whose physical shop is just across from the performance room. With over 130 people arriving at the venue on the basis of just two WeChat posts and word of mouth, and the room’s estimated capacity of thirty, most of the audience stayed in the corridor and ‘watched’ the entire show.

The Beneficial Society’s style is influenced by a range of bands. You’d see Cap’n Jazz-esque drum and guitar rhythms, Black Country, New Road-esque romanticism, Sunny Day Real Estate-esque outbursts and tension and Betcover!!’s approach for a fusion of styles in their tunes. Check out the video for their whole set.
