We will back immigrants anywhere on planet earth with our whole chest. Check out a brand new Taiwan-based crew called HAMMER STRAIT COLLECTIVE, consisting of Filipino immigrant workers in Taiwan. The main man behind the collective, Marion, gave us the low-down.
“I’m a Filipino immigrant worker here in Taiwan. This whole “promoter” thing came naturally after attending a bunch of small shows and festivals here in Taiwan. After a while, I didn’t even realize that I had gained a lot of friends in the Taiwanese scene.
One of the things I noticed was that not a lot of bands here had music videos. So one day I asked my friends in Taiwanese hardcore band HATEFUL REZPECT if they wanted one. So I asked a director friend of mine to fly out from the Philippines to put one together. We put it together back in September 2024 and it was featured on UNITE ASIA and was pretty successful.”
“The promoter thing happened when I tried to line up Filipino band TNG for the 2024 edition of PUNKSTRIKE FESTIVAL. Once we got the go ahead for TNG at that festival, I hooked up another show for them here as well. Once word got out about this in the Philippines, I got hit up by more bands who were interested in playing here.
As an immigrant worker, it’s really hard to organize shows because I work in a factory 12 hours a day. Time, money, language and I’m brand new at this struggling for resources. It’s really hard but after each show I put on its very fulfilling and I’m really proud of myself.
For now the collective has 3 people: me, Errol (A Filipino photographer), and Han Chen (Taiwanese) who manages some Taiwanese bands. She helps me a lot with organizing shows.”
