Easily one of our favorite things to come into our email inbox is when bands from OUTSIDE of Asia get their new to us and we pop open the email and see the band is made up of POC’s. HELL YES.
Check out American hardcore punk band CHERUB CHAINS on this insane debut demo that they’ve just dropped. The band’s vocalist, Molly, wrote in the following:
“Helloo! My name is Molly and I sing in a band called Cherub Chains from Seattle, Washington. We started up this band at the end of 2023 and released our first demo in August 2024.
Our style of music is 90s metallic riffs intertwined with heavy and contemporary hardcore mosh parts. We draw inspiration from Arkangel, Disembodied, Whispers, Kickback, Martyr AD, and Undying. We each come from a different cultural background- I’m Vietnamese, Mitchell (drummer) is Khmer, Carlos (guitarist) is Salvadoran, and Pedro (guitarist) is Chilean.
I write lyrics that center around my identity, personal traumas, mental health struggles, and the crimes and genocide currently happening around the world. The Southeast Asian diaspora contains so much pain – I can only imagine how much suffering my parents and ancestors went through to fight for a better future all while being in a precarious position. Being born as a Vietnamese-American means to protect the lives of my family/friends/those who look like me, defend myself, and never stop fighting and taking action. Hardcore is one place where I can express my internal rage and indignation. One of the best things that has come out of Cherub Chains so far is the connections we’ve made with other Asians in hardcore bands. The “Asian connection” in hardcore is so real. It’s an incredible feeling to be part of an uplifting and inspirational community where a symphony of frustration and values are shared all across the board. Thank you Unite Asia for always sharing badass bands from Asia and for featuring us!”
Big up to Molly for sending that amazing message directly to us!
