As a website that prides itself on writing about lesser-known communities all over Asia, we have backed the Indian and Nepali hardcore scene since day one. So when the movers and shakers of the small but passionate hardcore scene announced that they’re bringing Whispers out to India and Nepal, well, we knew this was a BIG deal for their communities. We hit up the dudes in charge who were kind enough to send us the following information:

It’s been a few years since Asian hardcore started popping off & the Western world has come to recognize the talent across the scenes here – especially when we’re talking about WHISPERS (Thailand) who are leading the front as arguably the biggest band in the genre to emerge from the region.
While Thailand, Indonesia & Japan have built strong independent scenes over the past few decades, the scene for hardcore music in South Asia has been slowly bubbling over time. Last year saw the first joint effort in the region to unite the Nepali & Indian scenes through the BILLED TO DESTROY TOUR, where STRANGLE and PACIFIST played shows in Nepal, and then came back to India playing packed sets across all major Indian cities (Delhi, Bangalore & Mumbai).

Here’s what Sidharth from HARAMCORE INC and Pacifist has to say about live music in recent times:
“It’s a crazy time to be in the audience here. We’ve had big rock acts like Linkin Park, Green Day to indie darlings like Amyl & The Sniffers & JPEGMAFIA play their first-ever shows in India in recent years. It was only a matter of time that our subcultures & the underground started to reflect this by giving people a taste of what the underground scenes have been building in our own neighbouring countries. Nepal & Thailand hardcore bands go fucking hard – no question. We need to bring people together & celebrate this shit more often!”

Ashish from Strangle (Nepal) got in touch with Gap (manager, Whispers) and pitched for the long overdue visit.
“We texted Gap and asked him if Whispers were interested in touring Nepal. We have been following them & have lots of fans & listeners from here, so it means a lot to us. Nepal is very excited to have them here finally; we have a growing hardcore scene & this would help build the scene further!”
This is the first time that both Ashish & Sidharth are stepping into the role of promoters; getting international bands to this part of the world is no easy feat. The cost of flying, visas, logistics all are daunting – but the guys are confident this effort will change the way people look at global hardcore to also include South Asia.
Sidharth adds, “It’s really about time – we want to put our best foot forward & give these guys a good time here. Our scene is dedicated & we want more bands to take notice, take chances & play shows. It’ll set the right standards on multiple levels – exposing audiences to diverse scenes that exist in Asia & beyond, to witness artists at the top of their game as touring bands & the energy they bring to a show, and to make connections beyond borders.”
More people need to recognise music outside their own context & embrace scenes outside their own – and that’s what hardcore is all about. As Jem Siow of Speed says, “One blood we bleed!”
