“Insignificant Power,” a new single from Indonesian metallic hardcore band DEFY, The track, dropped on DIVIDED WE FALL (Singapore) and HOLDING ON RECORDS (Bangkok, Thailand), serves as a preview of their debut LP titled “Devastation Manifest,” set to be released this year.
“Insignificant Power” depicts a crisis of trust in those in power. In this world, people are suspicious of one another, threats to life have become commonplace, and those who don’t conform are either bribed or eliminated. This greed creates suffering for ordinary people.
“Why do we have to clean up this mess? What exactly is their goal in pursuing power? We’re constantly haunted by crises and propaganda that fuel anger. Is it still worth trusting them? Or perhaps, are you part of them?” said Elan (Vocals).
“The riffs in this song/album are inspired by hardcore bands from the ’90s through the early 2000s. The overall sound is indeed crafted to evoke that era but with Defy’s own distinct character,” said Safar (Guitar).

The cover of this single was inspired by the Palindo Statue in Napu Valley, Central Sulawesi. To us, this statue is shrouded in mystery and is closely tied to our ancestors, the Kaili people. Since our tribe’s history was once passed down orally (without writing), many questions have arisen about the origins of this ancient stone. In fact, its unique, alien-like form feels beyond human comprehension. We call this statue the “lost megalith.”
The statue wears a shield signifying the position of a leader. Its large head and hands holding a phallus symbolize the immense burden of responsibility; the shield is inspired by the Tai Ganja, a symbol of the sacred female womb in our culture. At the back, the Tai Ganja merges with the spine, illustrating just how heavy the burden of life is that a leader must bear alone.
