After introducing their initial platform with the single “Strong Will” (2024), xDEFIANCEx has entered a deeper and more reflective phase with their latest EP, “Purgatory.” This EP marks a significant development, not only musically but also in the band’s understanding of resistance itself.
Purgatory itself is inspired by the theological concept of Catholicism, particularly its tradition of the transitory state after death, a phase of purification for souls who die in God’s grace but are not yet fully pure before finally achieving the holiness worthy of entering heaven. For xDEFIANCEx, Purgatory is interpreted as a metaphor for the internal human process: the in-between space filled with struggle, awareness, and self-care efforts to avoid being trapped in blinding anger. Resistance no longer stands simply as a confrontational stance but as a process of awareness and reshaping values.
This EP was developed over approximately a year, from mid-2024 to 2025, with a collective approach throughout the creative process. xDEFIANCEx emphasizes that this work was born from collective effort, without a rigid hierarchy. Farrel and Din composed the main instruments, establishing a musical foundation that serves as the EP’s primary exploration. Alfin handled the recording techniques and scheduling, ensuring a focused and consistent production process. Hikam handled the visual editing and layout, strengthening the release’s visual presentation, while Dhana formulated the EP’s concept and lyrics, weaving together a larger narrative about purification, awareness, and inner resistance.
Compared to the single “Strong Will,” the EP “Purgatory” feels far more exploratory. xDEFIANCEx consciously blended various new musical elements drawn from diverse genres, such as death metal, power violence, 90s metalcore, and even touches of ethnic music. This combination created a contrasting, darker, yet contemplative dynamic that aligns with Purgatory’s theme as a space of transition and purification.
The entire EP was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Griffin Studio, resulting in a denser and more aggressive compositional character while still allowing for details to highlight the various atmospheric elements. The EP’s visuals are captured through Bima Priantana’s cover artwork, which fully represents Purgatory as a symbol of the process of re-purification: not entirely dark, but not yet fully light.
The Purgatory EP was released on last February 26, 2026, in collaboration with SET THE FIRE RECORDS (Jakarta). This release serves as a statement that xDEFIANCEx continues to move forward and restructure their resistance, not only with power and fury but also with a well-maintained and cared-for consciousness.
After a significant hiatus, CELESTIAL GORGE is back with their first single from the upcoming album, releasing late 2026. Redemption is a cry for clarity amongst the noise of...
