There’s something so special following a band from basically their inception and watching them grow into their craft with more confidence…Lebanese hardcore punk band TA2REEBAN is EASILY one of those bands who have just gotten better with time. The band was sick to begin with – but on this brand new EP, the band doesn’t hold back and FULLY add whatever elements they want to add to their music. So rad…
Check out what the band sent in to us:
“On this new EP we took some more risks and liberties as a hardcore band. We incorporated Arabic folk rhythms on songs like تحت الطرقات (beneath the streets) and اكيد خسران (definitely a loser). We took a page out of the surf punk classics with Too Slow. Surf punk is a really interesting chapter in the crossover between traditional Arabic music and punk because a lot of it was inspired by Lebanese-American guitarist Dick Dale who really was translating derbake techniques onto the guitar. We were thinking a lot about that, and about the intersection of Arabic music and hardcore, on these tracks.
استفراغ (vomit) is the most melodic song we’ve ever done, which is kind of ironic since it’s about mental health and suicide. It’s our first song with actual singing. And then we have a bonus track which is a reimagining of a track by the excellent rap group Run the Jewels. That is definitely a departure for us. We started playing that one live just for fun, and the crowds really reacted to it, so we wanted to make it available to people who haven’t been to our shows.
Lyrically, we’re still focused on oppression and injustice in this capitalist world. But those systems cannot continue forever. They will inevitably collapse under their own contradictions, and we have to help that along. As the French protesters in ‘68 used to say, there’s a beach beneath the city streets. We cribbed that line on تحت الطرقات.
We’re excited to see how people react to the EP because we feel like it has some surprises in it. Now and forever, Free Palestine.”
