Long Running Japanese Hardcore Band SMASH YOUR FACE Release New Record

Flying the flag of Japanese hardcore from the 80s, Japanese hardcore band SMASH YOUR FACE have just released a brand new album.

“When we first formed, we wanted to mix Japanese hardcore with American 80s bands so we were influenced by bands like SOB, GAUZE, and LIP CREAM in Japan, and Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and the Dead Boys in the US,” state the band. It’s been 40 years, and though the lineup has completely changed, their sound has changed somewhat as well. “Nearly 40 years have passed since we started, and now, in addition to hardcore, I also listen to Japanese bands like Boris and Envy, as well as underground idols. Japan has a culture of underground idols, and there are also intense live shows with moshing and diving.”

On the lyrical content, “The theme on this record is “breaking away from existing hardcore styles.” It’s been a long time since hardcore was born. During that time, great bands and albums have been born. However, there is also the impression that the style has become fixed. We at SMASH YOUR FACE looked back at what “hardcore” is and decided to “make songs that have never been heard before.” To achieve this, we made extensive use of turntable scratch sounds.”
