Hong Kong rock band Qi today announce the release of the Racing for Our Lives EP – an upbeat, radio-friendly new collection to drop across all major digital platforms on 1/2/21 (February 1). A track from the EP is already streaming below on their bandcamp.
Conceived and recorded during lockdown, the three-track release is led by the biting rocker “Racing for Your Life”. Qi’s lead singer Zack moonlights as a semi-pro racing bike rider, a regular competitor at China’s Zhuhai International Circuit in the 250cc track racing bike class – a rich personal experience he drew on in crafting the track’s lyrics.
The music’s dynamic audio arc, built on pneumatic guitar riffs and squealing licks, was composed to emulate the momentum of the track and the noise of a revving engine. Together, “Racing for Your Life” offers both a front line missive capturing the adrenaline rush of the track and a universal ode to living your own way and overcoming strife we can all relate to after the trials of 2020.
The three-track EP also features a newly recorded arrangement of live favorite “Mona Lisa”, a Springsteen-esque portrait of two unlucky lovers growing up amid Hong Kong’s murky netherworld, and “Hold on to Feeling” – a swaying 6/8 rock ballad debuted at and dedicated to The Wanch, the beloved music venue which hosted Qi’s first and best gigs since 2018, suddenly shuttered due to the pandemic.
The Racing for Our Lives EP follows the debut digital release ‘Solstice Sessions’, which collected four re-edited tracks from the quintet’s LP-only album, Solstice.
