It’s The Underground’s birthday! And what better way to celebrate 14 years of championing the Hong Kong music scene than a big ol’ bash filled with the cream of local indie talent. After 260 shows showcasing more than 500 bands (many of them now regular faces at The Underground), we’ve watched countless newcomer acts blossom into local live favourites.
This special party will open with singer-songwriter Laura Kenny, known for her stunning voice and creative acoustic takes on best-loved pop songs, before rocker Ryan Hui’s The Stay Up cranks up the energy with his alternative, guitar-driven jams.
Next up, scene veterans 22Cats got their first taste of performing at The Underground back in 2005. Their style evokes the emotive alt-rock of groups like Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth; you might even recognise guitarist Chan Lam-por from Teenage Riot, another local favourite.
Get swept away on the soulful, west coast grooves of Mr Rockethead, before Still Minds wind the clock back to the 90s with sun-soaked songs distorted to perfection and a frontman whose voice channels all the rock greats.
Local rock royalty Nowhere Boys will then cast a spell with their enchanting tunes and exceptional musicianship, paving the way for a final jamboree by Kongo. His innovative and eclectic bunch will transport you to Woodstock festival with their congo-led jamboree of blues rock, recalling the sonic sorcery of Santana and Jimi Hendrix.
The Underground has also arranged for some great prizes to be won for the audience, including Edifier speakers, Volcom clothing vouchers, Polaroid headphones and Magic Organic Vegetables.
Come check out all these great acts, try your luck in the raffle, and raise a glass to 14 years of fun, friendship, and the freedom to play loud and proud at The Underground.
