Singapore Post Hardcore Act Caracal Launch First Instalment of New Show Series

Singaporean post hardcore band Caracal continue to show the world how it’s done.

If you play in a band in this day and age, you ain’t selling any music. Certainly not enough to justify tellin’ the fam “Hey ma – I quit my job. I’m going to play in a band fulltime.” After you stop crying from that mad slap across the head, you sit down with the rest of your crew and think about what possible means are there for bands to survive – or at the very least – make playing music worthwhile again. We all know, it’s no longer as easy as just releasing good music and think that things will mysteriously happen. Yeah, get the fuck outta here with that shit.

Our buds in Caracal came roaring back last year invigorated with a new lineup, new vocalist, and a brand new EP. Since then they’ve kept that train rolling, and today have announced something sick that is bigger than just promoting their own band. They’ve come back with the first instalment of a series of shows entitled Daily Essentials.

“We are excited and proud to announce Daily Essentials 2019 – A celebration of loud, alternative music with a line-up of incredible bands that we have crossed paths with during our journey as a band. The line-up we’ve put together is exactly what our Daily Essentials are, and it’s going to be a sweaty night for all who join us at Esplanade’s Annexe Studio.”

According to the press release, it’s not as simple as just bringing bands together, the event will be combined with food, beverage, art as well as music. The event takes place July 21 and if you’re in the country, this is your go to event. The lineup is BADASS featuring bands from Singapore, Japan as well as Philippines. Go peep the bands below…

Typecast is an alternative rock band from the Phillipines. Originally an underground act, they have surfaced on the mainstream Philippine music scene, while managing to hold on to their underground roots. The band broke into the local mainstream with the single, “Will You Ever Learn”, which won Best Song of the Year at the 2007 NU Rock Awards. This success eventually led to the
opportunity to open for other popular bands such as Thursday, The Rogel Romero Experiment, Darkest Hour, Good Charlotte, Saosin, Anberlin, and just recently, All Time Low, Dashboard Confessional, The Used, and Cobra Starship.

Nothing To Declare is an alternative rock band from Tokyo, Japan, which started out in Singapore in 2006 as a solo project of Mas Kimura while he was a member of pop punk band, Pug Jelly. They’ve headlined at Singapore’s biggest outdoor alternative music festival BayBeats twice, and a series of performances capped by a nationwide tour of Japan. With the release of their first album Your Obsession, they were called in to support FACT (Japan) on their label’s tour, supported ISSUES (USA) on their headlining show in Tokyo. They’ve also performed alongside Ken Yokoyama (Hi-Standard), Crossfaith, Man With A Mission, Hey-Smith and many more.

Valley Of Chrome is a Filipino metal band from Laguna, Philippines. The band’s music is considered as metal, with hardcore and punk elements. They also mix in hard rock and pop influences, in the form of melodic riffs and vocal lines. V.O.C., as they are alternately called, have released five EPs and four full-length albums. In 2018, Valley Of Chrome concluded their Crows and Vikings tour in the Blast and Nong Fest in Thailand. They also played in large metal festivals like the Philippines’ PULP Summer Slam with At The Gates; and Hammersonic Festival with headliner In Flames in Indonesia.

Marijannah is a stoner metal band from Singapore that marries sleepy stoner-doom with foot-tappin’ jams that wouldn’t seem out of place in a set by The Sword or Mutoid Man and surprisingly melodic vocal harmonies. Marijannah is put together by musicians from punk and grindcore backgrounds, was more than enough to stoke excitement in the scene here, not to mention the endorsements by music sites like Pitchfork and MetalSucks (who premiered the album), and a record deal with Pink Tank Records in Germany. The band is also in the studio recording their highly anticipated follow up. Hopefully this time around the band will have better luck with record labels.

HRVST is a three piece sludge metal outfit from Singapore. Offering wrenching riffs, back-breaking bass lines and tasteful drumming, HRVST brings you to an unusual level of dissonance. From playing shows that with ten people to sold out shows in Japan. HRVST also played along the likes of Hexis (Denmark) and Palm (Japan). Having put out four releases, the growth and maturity of the band’s music is ever growing and ever raging. No bullshit, all slow, all fast, and all heavy.

And of course you got the main act who put all this together – the mighty Caracal.
