It’s pretty rad to see that style of music people hate describing as “emo”, when it really is what it is, alive and well in Hong Kong. I think it’s so amusing to see people frown when they hear the word “emo” just like when people first started hating using the word “metalcore” to describe that early sound of hardcore bands that began adding a growing array of metal elements to their music. It is what it is.

Check out this band called Ponyboy…there is something so down-to-earth about this type of indie rock in particular. There are no cool clothes or hipster talk…it’s just a bunch of dudes playing a very stripped down type of music that really comes from the heart. There is no singer barking into a microphone (yes, I see the irony in that sentence being the singer of King Ly Chee hahahaha) and most of the times the singer is singing completely off key or out of time. THAT to me makes the music even more real…when it comes from the heart and the singer or musicians don’t care whether or not everything is “perfect” – it’s just how they feel when they pick up an instrument and start strumming away.

I can’t seem to find any actual recorded music by this band but when I do I’ll put it up…for now enjoy the live videos below.

Here’s their Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ponyboy.band?fref=ts

Another great Hong Kong band that you have to check out that is in the same vein sans vocalist is TFVSJS who we’ve talked about before…check them out too: https://www.facebook.com/tfvsjs?fref=ts
