Buddhist Death Metal Band Dharma Release Epic Debut Music Video – So Good [Taiwan]

Dharma, the Taiwanese/Canadian Buddhist death metal band based out of Taipei, Taiwan, has released its debut music video for the single “Nilakantha Dharani (Great Compassion Dharani),” taken from their first full-length album, Treasury of the True Dharma Eye (2021, Independent).

Dharma, a band that takes Buddhist sutras and mantras and sets them to death metal music, shot the video in early June at a Taipei studio. The shoot was helmed by director J.R. Shih, and stars Shih alongside fellow Taipei-based musicians Chris Baldwin (Artax Dies) and Boney Lee (Higher Rootz). Also appearing in the video is Buddhist nun Master Miao Ben, who performs both backing and lead vocals during Dharma’s live performances.

The Great Compassion Dharani is a sutra that calls upon the blessings of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes, with 84 phrases in total. This sutra calls to the Buddha’s great sense of compassion, rids one of sin, and instills peace and joy.

Dharma is currently making preparations to record its second, as-yet-untitled album, at studios around Taipei in August/September, and is booking tour dates worldwide for 2023.
