The Planetrox China Final 2016 was held successfully at HangOut on 11th June 2016. The long process of competing and voting came to an end in an energy-filled, explosive finale.

This year’s line-up started with The Three Hares, blasting out their alternative music and impressively kick-starting the competition. They were followed by Narcissus, who had the only female musician to make it to the final, with their intense Canto-rock. Third up was the classic rock band MonoChrome whose audience waved LED displays and sang along. Fourth up was Sugar Bro, wowing us with their joyful Brit-pop-esque energy and infectious laughter. The last finalist band was Tri-Accident, a hard rock band that had everyone in HangOut jumping and head-banging! Bamboo Star then wrapped up the night whilst votes were being counted.

A unianimous decision was made by the judging panel and the audience, the newly-crowned champion of this year’s Planetrox China is Sugar Bro. The grand prize of the trip to Canada was presented to them by Bamboo Star, last year’s winner, which Sugar Bro accepted with overflowing emotions & tears!

The complicated job to pick a winner out of five excellent bands rested on the shoulders of a panel of judges, which included Clem Fung (guitarist of RubberBand), Dennis Argenzia (Vice President, Asia Touring LiveNation) and Simon Gaudry (director of Planetrox). A list of criteria such as interaction with the audience and originality were reviewed before they came up with the final decisions. The audience votes counted for 25% of the votes.

Says Chris B, organiser of Planetrox China/Underground HK, “The bands this year were of such high standards, that it must have been a challenge for the judges AND the audience to pick a winner. Every band that makes it to the finals of Planetrox China is considered a winner by us. We were doubly excited about hosting the event in a festival-worthy venue to give the bands more experience at performing on larger stages. Big congratulations to Sugar Bro.”

This year’s winners, Sugar Bro, are overjoyed to be going to Canada to perform at the Envol et Macadam festival in September. The band revealed that “We are so thrilled and touched that we won Planetrox. Thanks to Sammy@KOLOR who recorded our song. Thanks to the audience who voted for us, thanks to the judges and thanks our family and friends who came to support us. Last but not least, thank you The Underground HK and Festival Envol et Macadam for organising this event !!!! Canada, we are ready!!”

Sugar Bro is a Hong Kong based band. Founded in 2011, they have been performing in Hong Kong regularly and plan to release their second album later in 2016.
